Am I in an Abusive Relationship? ‘I knew if I had to ask I already knew the answer.’

Longreads

In this installment of the Survival Skills column at Hazlitt,Katherine Laidlawrecalls an abusive relationship in which her boyfriend threatened her with a boxcutter. In examining why she stayed as long as she did, she observes how the emotional scars affect her thinking and perception in what should be a new, exciting relationship — to the point where “Everything now — a flicker of tone, a sideways glance, a distant voice on the end of the phone — is a sign, a flag, a warning.”

It’s hard to know what to do when someone says, “this is the knife I was going to use to kill you.” On a cold day in January, he holds a box cutter up to my face, runs it in front of my neck, his expression placid as flat water, and then walks calmly back over to a cardboard box that sits on…

Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind

Longreads

Sam Kriss, in a post he calls his “magnum opus” at The Outline, explores the age-old warning “Don’t stare directly at the sun.” Sure, there are medical reasons not to—but might there also be political ones? Do we have a moral duty to stare directly at the sun, and everything it represents?

Plato famously wanted a totalitarian society run by philosophers, in which ordinary people would live under the firm, rational, condescending guidance of those who had learned to see by the light of the Good. There’s always a kind of authoritarian undercurrent to rationalistic philosophy—take, for instance, Immanuel Kant. In What Is Enlightenment?, he argued that enlightened autocrats such as Frederick the Great of Prussia ought not to restrict the freedom of thought of his subjects, and that “freedom need not cause the least worry concerning public order or the unity of the community.” But this…

Freewheeling through Rural Andalusia: The Via Verde of Seville (Photo Story)

Not far north of Seville, there is a track winding back through the northern slopes of Andalusia, through the Sierra Morena, a gorgeous corrugated mountain range covered in olive and oak trees under which graze pigs, sheep and goat. The track follows and old railway line built a century ago to service an iron mine at the end of the line. Mostly dead straight and mostly an easy incline, the Via Verde is the perfect way to see Andalusia by bike. I followed its twenty or so kilometres up and back to see what I could see.

Gary Niermeier of Hoxie KS: On the Importance of Rocks in Japanese Gardening

In Japanese gardens, people including Gary Niermeier of Hoxie KS can see rocks, sand, and gravel of different shapes, sizes, colors, and textures. Rocks are some of the most important elements of Japanese gardens because designers use them to portray a vast number of landscapes, such as mountains, shorelines, and waterfalls. Sand and gravel usually form patterns that remind the visitors about clouds and streams.

Gary Niermeier of Hoxie KS: On the Importance of Rocks in Japanese Gardening

Garden designers usually use natural rocks found in the mountains or near the rivers and oceans. The designers pay special attention to the shapes and sizes of the rocks when selecting them for the gardens. Large rocks with sharp, angular surfaces become rugged mountain peaks. Smaller, water-worn rocks turn into weathered hills. Some garden compositions require rocks covered in moss, which means that such rocks need to be transported with great care. Recently broken rocks can become high mountain peaks.

Gary Niermeier of Hoxie KS: On the Importance of Rocks in Japanese Gardening

Sometimes, designers pick rocks of unusual shapes that resemble humans, birds, or animals. This practice has roots in China, where such rocks were used in the gardens representing the dwellings of immortals.

Another difference between Japanese and Chinese gardens is that the Japanese pay more attention to creating a whole picture with a garden, which is something that people like Gary Niermeier of Hoxie KS really enjoy, while the Chinese underline the uniqueness of individual rocks.
